On Tuesday 29 April, the Rail Cluster project hosted a timely and insightful online session featuring two of Network Rail’s leading voices on climate resilience: David Harkin, Weather Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation Strategy Manager, and Don Roberts, Head of Operational Weather Strategy.

As Scotland continues to experience the growing effects of climate change—rising temperatures, heavier rainfall, and more frequent extreme weather events—its rail infrastructure is feeling the impact. From landslips and flooding to operational disruptions, it’s clear that a strategic, data-driven response is essential.

David and Don delivered a session that was rich in information, taking attendees through a comprehensive overview of how Scotland’s Railway is addressing these challenges head-on. From robust data management techniques to the development of long-term climate adaptation strategies, the session highlighted the depth of work already underway to future-proof the rail network.

The presenters shared compelling facts and figures about recent weather trends and their implications for railway operations. They also discussed how Network Rail is using climate modelling and risk analysis to shape their approach, helping ensure that Scotland’s Railway remains safe, resilient, and operational in the face of a changing climate.

For those who missed the session—or want to dive deeper—you can explore more about how Scotland’s Railway is preparing for the future here: Scotland’s Railway Climate Readiness. You can also watch a series of short videos on the topic in the new playlist: Scotland’s Railway – Adaptation Pathways.

A huge thank you to David Harkin and Don Roberts for sharing their expertise and to everyone who joined us for the session. It was an important and timely conversation, and we’re proud to continue supporting efforts to build a climate-ready railway for Scotland.
