ScotRail marked Scottish Careers Week (10-14 November) with a visit from the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop MSP to its Shields Depot in Glasgow.

The event, organised with the Rail Cluster Scotland, showcased ScotRail’s largest ever intake of apprentices and graduates – 50 new starts this year, bringing the total to 93 across the business.

Students from City of Glasgow College and Glasgow Caledonian University joined ScotRail apprentices, graduates and industry leaders including Joanne Maguire, ScotRail Chief Executive and Barbara McIntyre, Engineering Director.

Fiona Hyslop MSP said:

“Scottish Careers Week provides a genuine opportunity to showcase the variety of industry sectors in Scotland and particularly the broad range of fantastic careers across Scotland’s Railway.  ScotRail now has more apprentices than ever, and that is a sign of commitment across government and the industry to develop skills and talent.”

Julie Dale, ScotRail HR Director added:

“We’re incredibly proud to have welcomed our largest ever intake of apprentices and graduates in 2025.  Our early careers programme offers a fantastic route into the industry. Bringing fresh energy, ideas and ambition to our business.”

Paul Sheerin, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering said:

“Scottish Careers Week is a powerful reminder of the importance of connecting young people with industries that are evolving and full of opportunity. Rail is one of those sectors – rich in innovation, engineering excellence and long-term career potential.”

The visit highlighted the collaborative efforts between government, industry and education to build a diverse, skilled workforce for the future of Scotland’s Railway.
